During the Second World War, Z Special Unit was formed as part of the Services Reconnaissance Department to conduct some of Australia's most daring covert operations throughout the South West Pacific. Operating deep behind enemy lines, these highly trained commandos carried out sabotage, intelligence gathering, reconnaissance, and guerrilla warfare missions that would become the blueprint for modern Australian Special Forces.

This limited edition collection commemorates five of the Unit's most iconic symbols, missions, and equipment, preserving the legacy of the extraordinary men who undertook 81 clandestine operations in defence of Australia and its allies.

#1 Sleeping Beauty Coin

The iconic Sleeping Beauty was a motorised submersible canoe designed to silently transport commandos into heavily defended harbours. Used to deliver operators carrying limpet mines, it represented one of the most innovative covert insertion methods of the war. Combined with parachute and submarine insertions, these specialised craft enabled some of Australia's most audacious special operations and helped shape the future of Australian special forces.

#2 Folboat Coin

Lightweight, collapsible, and remarkably versatile, the legendary Folboat allowed Z Special Unit operators to infiltrate enemy territory undetected. Inserted by submarine or carried overland before being assembled, these folding canoes played a vital role in reconnaissance missions, sabotage operations, and intelligence gathering throughout the South West Pacific. #3 Limpet Mine Coin

The limpet mine became one of Z Special Unit's most effective weapons during covert maritime operations. Famously employed during Operation Jaywick and later Operation Rimau, these magnetic explosive charges were secretly attached beneath enemy vessels in Japanese occupied harbours. Delivered by folding folboats or the motorised "Sleeping Beauty" submersible canoe, the limpet mine symbolises the ingenuity, courage, and precision that defined Z Special Unit operations.

#4 MV Krait Coin

Originally an unassuming fishing vessel, MV Krait became one of the most famous special operations craft in Australian military history. During Operation Jaywick in 1943, a team of fourteen commandos sailed more than 4,000 miles disguised as local fishermen before launching a covert attack inside Japanese occupied Singapore Harbour. Their successful destruction of seven enemy ships and safe return to Australia remains one of the most remarkable and daring commando raids ever undertaken.

This coin honours the Z Special Unit Memorial located at Garden Island, Western Australia. The memorial stands as a lasting tribute to the men of the Services Reconnaissance Department who served in extraordinary secrecy and whose courage, sacrifice, and innovation laid the foundations for generations of Australian Special Forces that followed.
