Z Special Unit Coin #3 - LIMPET MINE
Z Special Unit Coin #3 - Limpet Mine
During the Second World War, Z Special Unit was formed to carry out some of the most daring and covert operations in the South West Pacific. Operating behind enemy lines, the Unit was tasked with sabotage, reconnaissance, and guerrilla warfare. Their tactics laid the groundwork for modern Australian special forces.
This coin commemorates one of the Unit's most iconic mission tools - the limpet mine - used to sink enemy ships during covert harbour raids such as Operation Jaywick and Operation Rimau. Deployed using folding folboats or motorised submersible canoes known as “Sleeping Beauties,” these explosives were placed silently beneath Japanese shipping with deadly effect.
Coin #3 in the 5-part Z Special Commemorative Set, this limited-edition release features:
-
The Z Special Unit insignia
-
A detailed limpet mine design - a tribute to the ingenuity and bravery of those who carried out underwater sabotage in enemy territory
-
Handcrafted in solid pewter in Western Australia
-
Strictly limited to 100 coins only — never to be reproduced.
