The red poppy is a symbol of remembrance because it was one of the first flowers to bloom on the war-torn battlefields of World War I in northern France and Belgium, a sight that inspired Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae to write his famous poem, "In Flanders Fields". The vivid red of the poppies was later folklorically linked to the blood of fallen soldiers, making it a powerful emblem of sacrifice for those who died in war and a symbol of remembrance for all conflicts.

The poem and inspiration:

During the spring of 1915, after the Second Battle of Ypres, McCrae was moved by the sight of red poppies growing in profusion among the graves of soldiers. He wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields," which helped solidify the poppy's association with fallen soldiers.
Symbolism of sacrifice: Soldiers' folklore later suggested that the poppies' vivid red color came from the blood of their comrades soaking into the ground.

Post-war adoption:

The poppy was officially adopted as a symbol of remembrance after the war, with the British Legion in England and the Australian Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League first selling poppies in the early 1920s to honor the dead and help the living.

A symbol of hope:

Today, the red poppy symbolizes not only the sacrifices of the past but also the resilience of the human spirit and the hope for a peaceful future.
