SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT, A SOLDIERS JOURNEY - John Remynse
Though started as a collection of short stories about the author’s memories and experiences of two tours of Vietnam, this book eventually became the life story of a boy born in a country still suffering the effects of being ravaged under German occupation during WW2.
After emigrating to Australia, John served a total of 25 years in the Australian Army, mainly in Special Forces units. His final posting was as the Officer Commanding the Training Wing of the Army’s Parachute Training School.
Reflecting on his own experiences during his Vietnam service and his observations of the fallout of Australia’s involvement in Afghanistan led to an exploration of military leadership failures that resulted in many unnecessary deaths, injuries, trauma and blame-shifting. But rather than simply reporting them, he employed the skills and insights gained during his ‘second career’ in the corporate and academic worlds, where he was engaged in the recruitment, development, coaching and mentoring of leaders in a range of government departments, multi-national organisations and service industries.
Using criteria and performance standards he employed over more than 25 years, the author explores the levels of competence displayed by some of the leaders involved. His conclusions are not flattering!
