Operation Slipper was the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) contribution to the War in Afghanistan, which began in 2001. The Australian Special Air Service (SAS) played a key role, conducting reconnaissance and surveillance missions, especially in the early years.
Operation Slipper and the SAS
Initial Deployment: In November 2001, SAS troops were among the first ADF personnel deployed to Afghanistan to support coalition forces in the hunt for Al Qaeda and Taliban remnants.
- Roles and missions: SAS soldiers conducted critical reconnaissance, surveillance, and patrol missions, including operations in the challenging terrain south of Kabul.
- Support and other forces: The SAS operated alongside other ADF units. For example, RAAF C-130 Hercules provided logistical support and Boeing 707 refueling aircraft were based in Kyrgyzstan. The RAN conducted maritime interdiction operations in the Arabian Gulf.
Transition: Over time, the mission transitioned from direct combat to advisory and training roles, and Australia's military contribution under Operation Slipper ended on December 31, 2014.
