When established on 4 September 1964, the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) adopted the sand-coloured beret, cap badge and parachute wings of the British SAS. The cap badge represents the downward pointing sword 'Excalibur' wreathed in flames.

The British version of the cap badge is woven, with different types for officers and other ranks. To be more consistent with the egalitarian nature of the Australian character, the SASR badge is metal with silver and gold features and is worn by all members of the Regiment, regardless of rank.

In 1998, a former member of SASR, lan Young created a sculpture of the British SAS badge in Jarrah, which was based on a sketch provided by renowned military artist lan Coate. The piece is on display in the SASR Art Gallery and is described as "free standing and free flowing, a simplified form, creating the effect of the SAS badge being blown in the wind"

To commemorate the 60th Anniversary of SASR, the SAS Historical Foundation has produced a copy of lan Young's sculpture. Although paying homage to the original piece, this commemorative version incorporates the SASR badge, which has the wreathed flames in a more vertical position.

Funds raised from the sale of this 60th Anniversary commemorative sculpture will be used to maintain and further develop the SAS Historical Collection.
